In terms of linguistic diversity, the state has a unique position in Asia. Here people speak over 50 dialects and most of these come under the Tibeto-Burman language structure. Languages like Nyishi, Apatani, Bokar, Galo, Tagin, Adi which are widely spoken in Arunachal fall under the Tani dialect (a type of Tibeto-Burman language).


Agriculture primarily drives the economy. Jhum, the local term used for shifting cultivation is being widely practiced among the tribal groups, though owing to the gradual growth of other sources of income in the recent years, it is not being practiced as prominently as it was earlier. Arunachal Pradesh has close to 61,000 square kilometers of forests, and forest products are the next most significant sector of the economy. Among the crops grown here are rice, maize, millet, wheat, pulses, sugarcane, ginger, and oilseeds. Arunachal is also ideal for horticulture and fruit orchards. Its major industries are rice mills, fruit preservation and processing units, and handloom handicrafts.Arunachal Pradesh accounts for a large percentage share of India’s untapped hydroelectric potential.


The state government is expanding the relatively underdeveloped education system with the assistance of NGOs like Vivekananda Kendra, leading to a sharp improvement in the state’s literacy rate.There are also trust institutes like Pali Vidyapith run by Buddhists. They teach Pali and Khamti scripts in addition to typical education subjects. Khamti is the only tribe in Arunachal Pradesh that has its own script. Libraries of scriptures are in a number of places in Lohit district, the largest one being in Chowkham.


he culture of Arunachal Pradesh is truly varied in the sense that the state has 26 major tribes including sub-tribes. Every tribe has their own unique set of traditions and customs. The major tribes of Arunachal are: Adi, Galo, Aka, Apatani, Nyishi, Tagins, Bori, and Bokar etc. The sun and the moon are the presiding deities of the major tribes who follow the Donyi-Polo religion (the name stands for sun and the moon). The West Kameng and Tawang district are mainly inhabited by the Tibetan influenced Monpa and Sherdukpen tribe. In Lohit district it is the Khampti and the Singpho tribe.


Besides the diversity and abundance of natural resources, the strategic location of the Northeast region provides opportunities for development in the rapidly changing political and economic realities of the world. Both the Central and the State governments have realized the importance of this region and have taken initiatives to mitigate the problem. One such initiative is the identification of ‘Growth Centers’ in backward areas of the Northeast, the impulse of which would be generated and disseminated over space. The matter of employment opportunities and gainful self-employment in industrial and allied sectors had been given high priority. Industries based on the plantation, agriculture, horticulture, medicinal plants etc. have been reserved exclusively Tribal entrepreneurs of Arunachal Pradesh.
