About State

Kerala is one the coastal state of India, which is historically known as Keralam, is spread in South India on the Malabar Coast. Kerala was formed on 1 November 1956 following the States Reorganisation Act by combining Malayalam-speaking regions. Kerala is spread over 38,863 km2 (15,005 sq mi) and share its bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. Kerala is the thirteenth-largest state by population and divided into 14 districts,  Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state. It is Also known as Keralam, the land of kera or coconut is a never-ending array of coconut palms.

History

According to Hindu mythology and Ancient History of India, the lands of Kerala were recovered from the sea by the axe-wielding warrior sage Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, hence Kerala is also called Parasurama Kshetram (“The Land of Parasurama”) and according to that epic peoples believed the Kerala is “Gods own Country” . In History, Kerala is shrouded in the mists of tradition. The Peoples who first settled in Kerala spoke an archaic form of Tamil language. They also constructed the very strange monument in Granites, pottery and literate which are also matched and similar with megalithic monuments of West Europe and Asia. Kerala is one of the major producers of spices since from 3000 BCE, According to historical records Kerala is known and mentioned as Spice garden of India and garden of Spice. Production and export of Spice also attract many foreign travelers to Malabar coast. Various Merchants from West Asia and Southern Europe established coastal posts and settlements in Kerala. After the independence of India in 1947, on 1 November 1956 taluk of Karasgod in south kanara district of Madras, Malabar districts of Malabar and Travancore-Cochin merged and formed Kerala State under the States Reorganisation Act of the constitution of India.

Geography

Kerala specifically known as the land of kera or coconut is the land of a never-ending array of the coconut palm, sun-blanched beaches, enchanting backwater,  magical monsoon showers, and silent valleys vibrant with flora and fauna. Kerala is famous for its misty mountains of the Western Ghats which spread the fragrance of spice. Kerala lies along the coastline, to the extreme southwest of the India. Kerala coastline spread along the Arabian Sea on the west and the mountains of the Western Ghats on the east. Kerala which is also known as the land of “Parasurama” stretches north-south along a coastline of 580 km with a varying width of 35 to 120 kms. The most important rivers from north to south in India which crosses from Kerala are Valapattanam river (110 km.), Chaliar (69 km.), Kadalundipuzha (130 km.), Bharathapuzha (209 km.), Chalakudy river (130 km.), Periyar (244 km), Pamba (176 km), Achancoil (128 km.) and Kalladayar (121 km.). Other than these, there are 35 more small rivers and rivulets flowing down from the Ghats and gives irrigation and massive fertile land in Kerala.

Politics

Kerala State hosts two major political alliances which are “The United Democratic Front (UDF)”, which is  led by the Indian National Congress and the other is “The Left Democratic Front (L”, which is led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist)which is also known as (CPI(M). When Kerala is formed in 1956, It was under President’s rule and the first polls went in the state in March 1957. In Kerala, there were 126 Assembly and 16 Parliamentary seats. The Communist Party of India became the single largest ruling party in Kerala’s first polls results. In Kerala, the  local government bodies such as Panchayat, Municipalities, and Corporations have existed since 1959. The Governor of Kerala is the constitutional head of state and is appointed by the President of India.The Kerala Legislative Assembly popularly known as Niyamasabha comprises elected members and special office bearers. The Speaker and Deputy Speaker Legislative Assembly of elected by the members from among themselves.In Kerala, there are 140 assembly constituencies and the state elects 20 members s for representation in the Lok Sabha and 9 members for representation of Kerala in the Rajya Sabha respectively.

Major Cities

Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala is the largest city in the state and performs also the major role in the economy of Kerala. Kozhikode, Kochi, Kollam, Thrissur, and Kannur are other major cities of Kerala. In Kerala tourism is big sector and helps state economy to grow fast.

Their simple lifestyle shows Most of them stick to their original and traditional way of living, which is away from the glitter of the stressful city life. Peoples of Kerala also referred to as ‘Malayalees” because Malayalam is spoken by the people of Kerala widely.They give a lot of importance to education and as a result, the literacy rate is quite high here. Women in Kerala enjoy a better status than anywhere else in the country. Cases of evils like abortions, fatal daughter syndrome and female infanticide are very rare.

Economy

After the independence in India, Kerala state was managed as a democratic socialist welfare economy. Restrictions against Licence Raj and capitalism improves economic expansion in Kerala. Foreign direct investment and liberalization of the mixed economy lead to increase in employment in Kerala. The “Kerala phenomenon” or “Kerala model of development” of very high human development and in comparison low economic development has resulted from a strong service sector. Mainly the Kerala economy depends on peoples which are emigrants working in foreign countries, mainly in Arab states of the Persian Gulf, and remittances. In Kerala, the key agricultural staple is rice, with varieties grown in extensive paddy fields. The main agricultural products are Coconut, tea, coffee, cashew, and spices—including cardamom, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in Kerala. Kerala produces 97% of the national output of black pepper and accounts for 85% of the natural rubber in the country which makes this state leading exporter of spice in India. with the long coastline of 590 kilometers (370 miles) and large numbers of inland water resources, Kerala is also one of the leading producers of fish in India. This contributes to about 3% of the total economy of the state.

Education

In 1991, Kerala became the first state in India to be recognized as a completely literate state. In Kerala education is streamlined into lower primary, upper primary and secondary school stages with a 4+3+3 pattern. English is the language of instruction in most self-financing schools, while government and government-aided schools offer English or Malayalam. From the survey reports, 99.7% of the villages in Kerala had a primary school within 2 kilometers (1.2 mi), 98.6% had a middle school within 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) and 96.7% had a high school or higher secondary school within 5 kilometers (3.1 mi). In January 2016, Kerala became the first Indian state to achieve 100% primary education through its literacy program Athulyam. The key factor to make Kerala most successful in literacy rate is the difference in household expenditure on education was much less in Kerala than in the rest of India.

Culture

The Culture of Kerala synthesis of Aryan and Dravidian cultures, defined by its antiquity and the organic continuity sustained by the Malayali people.It is an integral part of Indian culture because Kerala culture is composite and cosmopolitan in nature.The Culture of Kerala is known for distinctive lifestyle, art, architecture, language, literature, and social institutions. In Kerala, over 10,000 festivals are celebrated in the state every year. The state festival Onam is a harvest festival celebrated by the people of Kerala and is reminiscent of the state’s agrarian past. Also,  Kerala is home to a number of performance arts and classical dance forms: Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattom, Thullal and Krishnanattam, which originated and developed in the temple theaters from a long time. The elephant is the state animal of Kerala and is featured on the emblem of the Government of Kerala. Also, Kerala is home to the largest domesticated population of elephants in India.

In last few years, Kerala has focused more attention towards the growth of Information Technology sector with the formation of Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram which is one of the largest IT employers in Kerala. It was the first technology park in India. This step opens new gates of IT Employees in Kerala and produce jobs in IT sector. Develop service level improvement plan (SLIP), a plan for better functioning of the local urban bodies in the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Palakkad also provide employment and various jobs in Kerala. Traditional industries manufacturing items; coir, handlooms, and handicrafts employ around one million people and in these years government of Kerala is approaching more to development and increase this area. Kerala’s banking sector is also third-highest bank penetration among Indian states. Kerala became the first state in the country to have at least one banking facility in every village. The KSIDC has promoted more than 650 medium and large manufacturing firms in Kerala, creating employment for more people.
