About State

Uttarakhand was formed on 9th November 2000 as the 27th State of India, when it was carved out of northern Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand is located in the foothills of the Himalayan mountain ranges, it is largely a hilly State, having international boundaries with China (Tibet) in the north and Nepal in the east. On its northwest lies Himachal Pradesh, while on the south is Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand is known for its natural beauty of the Himalayas, the Bhabhar, and the Terai. It Is also called the Devbhumi – “Land of the Gods” due to many Hindu temples and pilgrimage centers found throughout the state. Char-dhams, the four most sacred and revered Hindu temples of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri are nestled in the mighty mountains of Uttarakhand. The capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun which is the largest city in the region.

History

Uttarakhand is known for its natural beauty and temples as a dev Bhoomi. Rock paintings and megaliths of pre-historic times provide evidence that this region has been inhabited since ancient times. There are also archaeological remains which show the existence of early Vedic (c. 1500 BCE) practices in the area. The Uttarakhand region was originally settled by Kol people and then turns among Pauravas, Kushanas, Kunindas, Guptas, Gurjara-Pratihara, Katyuris, Raikas, Palas, Chands, Parmars or Panwars, and the British rule period. From ancient to the present day, Uttarakhand also served as a habitat for Rishis and Sadhus. Uttarakhand region was mainly consolidated under the Garhwal Kingdom in the west and the Kumaon Kingdom in the east by the medieval period. Uttarakhand is composed of two words, “uttar” meaning “north” and “aanchal” meaning “blessings. After post independence of India Uttarakhand is broadly divided into two zones Kumaon and Garhwal. On 24 September 1998, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly and Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council passed the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, which began the process of creating a new state.[20]Two years later the Parliament of India passed the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000 and thus, on 9 November 2000, Uttarakhand became the 27th state of the Republic of India.

Geography

Uttarakhand is situated on the southern slope of the mighty Himalayas, which has 86% is mountainous and 65% is covered by forest. Two of India’s biggest rivers, the Ganges and the Yamuna start off from the glaciers of Uttarakhand. The total geographic area of Uttarakhand is 53,483 km².The highest elevations are covered by ice and bare rock in Uttarakhand. Mount Nanda Devi is the highest peak of Uttarakhand with the altitude of 7816 m above sea level. The climate of Uttarakhand is stridently distinguished in its two diverse divisions: the major hilly terrain and the smaller plains. The northern part of the state enveloped in the mighty Himalayas shows complete traits of Himalayan climate exerting an appreciable extent of influence on monsoon and rainfall patterns.The Himalayan ecosystem provides habitat for many animals (including bharal, snow leopards, leopards, and tigers), plants, and rare herbs.

Politics

There are 13 districts in Uttarakhand which are grouped into two divisions, Kumaon and Garhwal. Four new districts named Didihat, Ranikhet, Kotdwar, and Yamunotri were declared by then Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Ramesh Pokhriyal, on 15 August 2011 but yet to be officially formed. The state also contributes 5 seats to Lok Sabha and 3 seats to Rajya Sabha of the Indian Parliament and The judiciary consists of the Uttarakhand High Court, located at Nainital. Politics in Uttarakhand is dominated by the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party and these parties have ruled the state in turns. In the year 2017 Legislative Assembly election, on 18 March 2017 Trivendra Singh Rawat sworn as the 8th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand of Fourth Assembly.

Major Cities

Dehradun is the largest and capital city of the state spread in the area of 102 km2 with a population of 706,124. Haridwar, Roorkee, and Haldwani are the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th largest cities respectively.Dehradun, Haridwar, and Nainital can be named the shopping destinations in Uttarakhand. Nainital, on the other hand, is famous for the main hand made candles and colorful Lac bangles. Like Dehradun and Mussoorie, Nainital also has fern showpieces, wood carvings, and woolen clothing.

About Citizen

Uttarakhand is a region with great ethnic diversity. Though nobody can be called a native here, there are tribes and villages of people who have no other place to relate to. They are mostly dependent on agriculture and handicrafts. The economy revolves around the fairs that are held all round the year. Uttarakhand is divided into two major regions called Garhwal and Kumaon, on the basis of linguistic and geographic diversity. People of Uttarakhand are commonly known as Pahari, meaning people from hills. Uttarakhand has a number of tribes like Jadh, Marcha, Tolcha, Shauka, Buksha, Tharu, Jaunsari, Bhotia, Raji and Gujjar with ethnic Garhwali and Kumauni people

Economy

The Uttarakhand state is the second fastest growing state in India. Like most of India, agriculture is one of the most significant sectors of the economy of Uttarakhand. the most widely grown crops in Uttarakhand are Basmati rice, wheat, soybeans, groundnuts, coarse cereals, pulses, and oil seeds. Also, fruits like apples, oranges, pears, peaches, litchis, and plums are widely grown and important to the large food processing industry in Uttarakhand. In last years, Uttarakhand successfully developed three Integrated Industrial Estates (IIEs) at Haridwar, Pantnagar, and Sitarganj, Pharma City at Selaqui, Information Technology Park at Sahastradhara (Dehradun), and a growth center at Siggadi (Kotdwar). After industrial sectors in public-private partnership mode were developed in the state Uttarakhand economy becomes stronger. In Uttarakhand, the Key industries include tourism and hydropower, and there is prospective development in IT, ITES, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and automobile industries. The service sector of Uttarakhand mainly includes tourism, information technology, higher education, and banking.

Education

In Uttarakhand literacy rate of the state was 79.63% with 88.33% literacy for males and 70.70% literacy for female at the 2011 census. There are mainly government-run, private unaided (no government help), and private aided schools in Uttarakhand. The main school affiliations are CBSE, CISCE or UBSE, the state syllabus defined by the Department of Education of the Government of Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand is also home to a number of universities and degree colleges. Dehradun is known as school capital of India.

Culture

The highlights of the Uttarakhand culture should be its history, people, religion, and dances. All of them are a beautiful amalgamation of different influences from all the races and dynasties it has been ruled by. Its history is chequered in comparison to the arts culture but still interesting enough to hold a person’s consideration. Uttarakhand has all the things in abundance which depends upon its inhabitants, environment, and its heritage. The Culture of Uttarakhand indicates thatReligion or faith can be defined as belief in a supernatural power that protects us, punishes us and provides us with whatever we need. It sometimes has a face and sometimes it doesn’t but the faith prompts people to worship this power.  Uttarakhand too celebrates a number of festivals all the year round. Since most of the population resides in rural areas, many festivals are related to the land and soil. Basant Panchami, Bhitauli, Harela, Phool Dei, Bat Savitri, Ganga Dusshera are some major festivals of Uttarakhand.
