History of Kerala University
The University of Travancore was renamed as the University of Kerala after the University Act (Act 14 of 1957) was brought into force. From its earliest history of Kerala University, it was started as Christian Missionary as Headmaster from after that in the very short period grew into a college in 1866, affiliated to the Madras University. When this college transformed as the University of Travancore, the departments of college redesignated as departments of the university. At that time when University was founded, the government of state tried an failed attempt to introduce Sir Albert Einstein to be the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. This University is formed as modeled after the best universities in Britain and at present, it retains some of those features. From last seven decades Kerala University switched over in many ways, it grew and shrunk physically but Its importance still remains.
The number of affiliated colleges in three campuses ie Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode, which were located in three different parts of the University, increased. However, in 1968, the University Center in Kozhikode became a full university, affiliated with colleges located in Calicut University, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts of Kerala, converted the Kozhikode Center into university departments. After the University of Cochin and Science – CUSAT – (1971), Mahatma Gandhi University (1983) and Kerala Agricultural University (1971) were established, as well as CUSAT took charge of the University Center in Cochin. These incidents have shrunk the jurisdiction of Kerala University in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha district and parts of Pathanamthitta district.
Shri Justice P. Sathasivam is present Chancellor of the Kerala University. In the present time, the university has various study centers and others departments, also 16 faculties and 41 departments of teaching and research. Expansion of education, research and knowledge is the mandate of departments, they focus primarily on the postgraduate (masters) program, MPhil program (1-year research degree) and doctoral research. Ganapati Sabha etc. The total number of full-time students in university departments is above 2000, in which there is a nominal number of research students and foreign students. The Institute of Distance Education offers many undergraduate and postgraduate programs that meet more than 7000 students throughout the country and abroad.
