NIFT National Institute of Fashion Technology is a fashion institute in India. It was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and is an institution of design, management, and technology for the international fashion business. NIFT was granted statutory status in 2006, empowering it to award degrees and other academic distinctions.

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is a Statutory Institute Governed by the NIFT Act 2006. Bringing in a wide range of aesthetic & intellectual orientations, the early instructors included leading progressive scholars from Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, USA. The in-house faculty was drawn in from a distinguished group of intellectuals who put forth a sense of dynamism creating a pathway to effective learning. Pupul Jaykar Hall at NIFT headquarters in New Delhi is a reminiscence of many educational thinkers and visionaries who have been instrumental to the institute’s road map to success. Academic inclusiveness has been a catalyst in the expansion plans of the institute. Over this period, NIFT has spread its wings across the length and breadth of the country. Through its 15 professionally managed campuses, National Institute of Fashion Technology provides a framework to ensure that prospective students from different parts of the country achieve their highest potential through the programs offered. A new center in Ompora Industrial area, Kashmir, too, is expected to come up.The Institute is currently headed by a Director-General, Sarada Muraleedharan.
Curriculum: NIFT offers four-year undergraduate, as well as two-year post-graduate, programs in the areas of design, management, and technology. In order to secure admission in Bachelor of Design (B.Des) as well as Master of Design (M.Des) programs offered at NIFT, students need to take two written admission tests called the Creative Ability Test (CAT) and the General Ability Test (GAT).For other courses such as Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BFTech), Master of Fashion Technology (MFTech) and Master of Fashion Management (MFM), aspirants need to take only the GAT.The curriculum at NIFT allows students to easily blend into a global network, as well as acquire a greater appreciation of local industry trends. The multidisciplinary and broad-based structure aims at an all-round development of students. Deriving from the changing paradigms of industry and commerce, its content as well as the methodology is constantly reviewed by academia and industry experts.
NIFT Admissions: NIFT organizes its own entrance exam yearly in India. The NIFT admission process comprises three stages. Candidates need to first appear for a written test. Students who make it to the rank-list in this test are then eligible to appear for the situation test, and then the personal interview round.
Important Academic Activities
Craft Survey and Documentation: As part of the Craft Cluster initiative of NIFT, students undertake field visits to closely interact and work with craftsmen to add value to their products.
Educational Visits: Students frequently visit industrial units to integrate theory with practice. They also visit museums, art galleries, exhibitions, and trade fairs to keep abreast with latest fashion trends.
Industry Internship: Students intern for six to eight weeks to understand the structural and functional constituents of the industry. During the internship, students learn to adapt to real industry situations and are assigned practical projects, which equip them for decision-making in a realistic environment. The internship also helps strengthen the relationship between industry and students.
Design Collection/Diploma Project: The graduation project undertaken by students encapsulates the various skills imbibed during the course of study. The industry-sponsored project provides a challenging platform for students to extend and demonstrate academic learning.
National Resource Centre:
The Network of NIFT Resource Centres is the only Fashion Information System (FIS) in India catering to the information needs of fashion professionals, would-be professionals and fashion educators. The integrated collections of print, digital, audio and visual creative resources are the only systematically documented learning resources available in India for the study of international and contemporary Indian fashion. FIS is a decentralized network, computerized and coordinated by the National Resource Centre at NIFT, Head Office, New Delhi.
