Introduction

In India, the Police force is known as Indian Police services (IPS) which are of the three all India services serves under Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. After India gained independence from British rule, Indian Police services came into existance and replaced Indian Imperial Police. The main  roles of police services are to maintain law n orders & and to prevent and detect crime in states and country. Until and unless there are internal peace and discipline in the country it’s really difficult to carry out the administrative and other welfare programs. The Bureau of Police Research and Development is responsible for research and development of the police force in India. In India Each State and union territory of India has a state police force which is headed by the  the Commissioner of Police (State) or Director General of Police (DGP). Ranks in Indian Polices services are catagorised in 3 forms Gazetted officers, Class 2 Gazetted officers, and Non Gazetted officers. Gazetted officers include all the Indian Police Service’ officers and all State Police Services officers of and above the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) or Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in State Police and Metropolitan Police forces. Circle Inspector and Inspector of Police included in Class 2 Gazetted officers. There are various posts included in Non Gazetted officers like Sub-Inspector, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Head Constable, Senior Police Constable and Police Constable.

Importance

The Indian Police services is not a force itself but provides leaders and commanders to staff the state police and all-India Central Armed Police Forces. Its members are the senior officers of the police.  An IPS officer works for the dual government, that means, for both central and state governments. At the federal level, the many agencies are part of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and support the states in their duties. Larger cities also operate metropolitan police forces, under respective state governments. All senior police officers in the state police forces, as well as those in the federal agencies, are members of the Indian Police Service (IPS).The head of each of the federal law enforcement agencies is always an Indian Police Service (IPS). The constitution assigns responsibility for maintaining law and order to the states and territories, and almost all routine policing—including apprehension of criminals—is carried out by state-level police forces. The constitution also permits the central government to participate in police operations and organisation by authorising the creation of Indian Police Service.

Education

IPS officers are recruited from Civil Services Examination. They are also promoted from State Police Services and DANIPS. However, at present, recruitment from Limited Competitive Examination has been put on hold. Eligibility conditions for Police Personals is defined by Govt recruitment laws. Each rank has different criteria which includes age limit, Education and Physical qualification. Once candidate satisfied all these criteria, he/she can take part in recruitment exam of Indian Police. The eligibility criteria for the Indian Police Service IPS and Indian administrative service IAS officer is the same, but there are some additional requirements. It is the physical requirements. The procedure goes like once the candidate clears the civil service exam and he gets allotted to the service of Indian Police then as per his rank he has to undergo a physical test which is not only mandatory but also necessary for the Police force.

Roles and Skills

The major role of police services are to fulfil duties based on border responsibilities, in the areas of maintenance of public peace and order, crime prevention, investigation, and detection, collection of intelligence, VIP security, counter-terrorism, border policing, railway policing, tackling smuggling, drug trafficking, economic offences, corruption in public life, disaster management, enforcement of socio-economic legislation, bio-diversity and protection of environmental laws etc. Indian police services also leading and commanding the Indian Intelligence Agencies. Police services also to interact and coordinate closely with the members of other All India Services and with the Indian Revenue Service and also with the Indian Armed Forces primarily with the Indian Army. In India police service inculcate integrity of the highest order, sensitivity to aspirations of people in a fast-changing social and economic milieu, respect for human rights, broad liberal perspective of law and justice and high standard of professionalism.

Branches in Indian Police Services

As the work on an IPS officer is very vast and comprises of great remit , therefore to provide some easy in their working,and to fulfill these functions their services is divided into various functional departments including “Crime Branch”, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) “, Home Guards”, Traffic Bureau ” and many more.  Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are the major department in India police services.

Jobs

The recruitment to this service is done by the respective State Governments, usually through State Public Service Commissions. Some of the posts are recruit by the Staff Selection Commission, the staff conducted the exam all over India and recruit according to eligibility. The recruitment to SPS is also on the same pattern as that for IPS. The only difference is that the recruitment of SPS officers is made by the State Public Service Commission concerned through usually a combined competitive examination for State Civil Services which in the case of IPS is through the All-India Civil Services Examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission. Eligibility conditions for Police Personals is defined by Govt recruitment laws. Once candidate satisfied all these criteria, he/she can take part in recruitment exam of Indian Police. he Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) or Assistant Superintendents of Police (ACP) are recruited every year by the UPSC (a wing of the central government) by an extremely competitive exam and are appointed into the Indian Police Service. The IPS officers are then assigned to a state force. Lower, non-managerial positions are selected by the state or central government and are trained at Police Recruit Schools. The duration of training for inspectors is roughly a year, and for constables is nearly 9 months. The training staff for these schools are drawn from the police force itself.Police are trained in basic law,self-protection,weapon handling etc. from recruit stations best recruits are taken into special forces where they undergo special training. Recruitment process of State police is maintained by State Police Recruitment Boards.
